- Conventional Spine Surgery
We provide specialized services for common degenerative spine conditions such as disc prolapse (herniation or slipped disc). Not only do we do open surgery, we also perform routinely microdiscectomies and mini open discectomies. For spinal stenosis, unless instability has been demonstrated clinically and radiologically, a spinous processes and interligamentous sparing procedure for decompression laminectomy is performed to ensure added stability to present iatrogenic instability. We also coordinate post operative rehabilitation regimes with our physiotherapists. Surgery will only be carried out when all other forms of conservative methods are exhausted. Please refer to the page on spine degeneration for more details. - Spinal Fusion Surgery
In the presence of instability, supplementary fixation using titanium implants is performed to avoid post operative back pain. These screws can be inserted using limited incisions (minimally invasive or keyhole) to minimize post operative pain, shorter hospital stay, faster recovery and return to normal activities. Fusion can also be done via an abdominal incision in certain cases which will eliminate “collateral damage” to the back muscles during posterior approached surgery. Please refer to the pages on various fusin methods for more details (under patient education). - Artificial Disc Replacement
Artificial disc replacement procedures have gained popularity recently as the implants allows for the preservation of motion of the spine. It is most advocated in the cervical region where mobility is of essence. However due to the short duration of use, current data are insufficient to determine that this procedure is the gold standard for all degenerative spine conditions. - Dynamic Stabilisation Procedures
These procedure is recently introduced for early stage degenerative spine conditions. The procedure is minimally destructive, preserves motion and can be done even under local anaesthesia with sedation. However, the procedure can only be successfully done in carefully selected cases. - Vertebroplasties and Kyphoplasties
In patients with osteoporotic compression insufficiency fractures of the vertebral body, bone cement can be injected under X ray guidance to strengthen and repair the fracture. Kyphoplasty is a procedure similar to vertebroplasty. It uses a balloon system to create a cavity within the bone so that the alignment can be corrected and allow for the bone cement to be injected with minimal pressure and hence reduces the risk of cement leakage into the neural canal. This procedure can also be used to provide temporary pain relief for patients with metastatic spine disease. - Selective Epidural Steroid and Facet Injections
Precise injections of steroid medication into facet joints and around nerve roots can provide temporary relief to symptoms. In some cases, the injections can serve to be therapeutic. However, most injections are performed as it helps in the diagnostic process of determining the level and source of pain which will be integral in determining which levels to fuse during the fusion surgery. - Hip and Knee Joint Arthritis and Joint Replacement (Centre for Orthopaedics & Hip & Knee Surgery)
We provide specialized services for arthritis especially of the hip and knee and other joints in the body. This includes specialized protocols for pre operative as well as post operative rehabilitation regimes. Joint replacement will be carried out when all other forms of conservative methods are exhausted. Please refer to the page on knee arthritis for more details. - Shoulder and Elbow Problems (Centre for Sports & Shoulder & Elbow Surgery)
With an ageing population as well as with increasing numbers of adults participating in sporting activities, shoulder and elbow problems are increasing in frequency. Common shoulder problems include rotator cuff tendonitis, impingment syndrome of the shoulder to frank shoulder dislocations. Common elbow problems usually include tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) as well as golfers elbow (medial epicondylitis). Please refer to the pages on shoulder and elbow problems for more details (under patient education). - Arthroscopic Surgery and Sports Surgery
Arthroscopic surgery is basically minimally invasive surgery using key hole access to handle joint problems. This basically entails the use of a camera with small portals to treat cartilage problems as well as ligament problems of the joints. This can be carried out in most joints in the body and is most frequently carried out on the knee. With increasing numbers of younger adults participating in vigorous sporting activities, there is an increasing incidence of injury to the various joints of the body, mainly the shoulder as well as the knee. However, with the advent of arthroscopic surgery, many of these conditions can be handled using an arthroscope which is essentially a day surgical procedure. - Trauma Surgery
Trauma Surgery in the field of orthopaedics is mainly treatment of fractures. We treat all types of fractures using conservative methods to open reduction and internal fixation when it is required. - Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a very prevalent health problem in the developed countries of the world. We are able to provide education and counseling on the various modalities of treatment of osteoporosis. - General Orthopaedics
General orthopaedics, as the name suggests, entails the treatment of very common orthopaedic conditions. Such conditions include trigger fingers, carpal tunnel syndrome, dequervain tendonitis etc. We have tried to make this web site as comprehensive as possible to cover as many common orthopaedic conditions.
We hope that you will take time to browse through the web pages especially on patient education as well as the section on spinal conditions. Please feel free to email us at any time if you have any questions.
